Spicy, Garlicky Brussels Sprouts For the Soul

Take 1 1/2 lbs of sprouts, halved and put them in a pot with salted boiling water.  Cook until bright green, which is about 2-3 minutes, and then drain and pat them dry with a paper towel.
Heat 3 tbsp of olive oil in a large deep skillet...get it to start shimmering, but before it starts to smoke...then add 2 large garlic cloves, smashed, and the sprouts...let cook over high heat for about a minute without stirring. Add 1/2 tsp of crushed red pepper, season with salt, and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until they are browned and tender...usually about 3 minutes.  Transfer to a serving bowl. And serve warm.  This recipe is for 6...or if you really like sprouts, for 2...maybe for one.

So why do I have this recipe on my blog, you ask?  Silly question! Because eating delicious things is not only physically satisfying but it soothes the mind. Comfort food, no less.

I recall reading something that Oscar Wilde said, "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken."  I liked that quote because it made me aware that I need not try to fit myself into someone else's mold.  To quote another, a very dear friend:  "I am adult with a logical and emotional thinking mind, please let me use it and don't treat me like a brainless idiot." .....Ah,  yes, that means if something can be stated without evidence, if it is presented without clarity and logic and reason, I am allowed to dismiss it without reproof  and be done with it....forever.  Good. Done.

MacDonald's Happy Meals have been banned in San Francisco out of fear they may encourage unhealthful eating....But my own form of "happy meals" are not banned....I will not force-feed you broccoli or Brussels sprouts if you come to my table...nor will I try to change you into someone you are not.  I promise not to treat you like an idiot, but if you would like some Spicy, Garlicky Brussels Sprouts For the Soul, I will share mine with you.
